Hyper 6 : Installation Guide & FAQ

Postby Grump on Tue Jun 15, 2004 12:00 am

This is a guide that I hope will help you install the Hyper 6 CPU cooler on your motherboard. The images here are taken by me as I installed the unit on my P4 motherboard. I will try to add additional pictures of an installation on an AMD K8 motherboard at a later date.

1. The original retention module must be removed before installing the new retention module included with the Hyper 6 cooler. The white pins you see below will be removed first.

Image

2. Turn the motherboard over and, pressing firmly, with a flat bladed screw driver between the retention module legs, push the pin flush with the bottom of the motherboard. Do the same with all 4 pins.

Image

3. Turn the board face up and continue to pry and lift the pins out of the retention module legs.

Image

4. From the back of the motherboard again, squeeze the retention module legs and push them through the hole.

Image

5. On the back of the motherboard, place the Universal Back Plate so that the raised areas fit into the retention module holes.

Image

6. Using the supplied short screws, attach the new Universal Retention Module to the back plate. Set the screws snug, but do not over-tighten.

Image

7. Install the CPU and apply a thin coating of Cooler Master Thermal Paste to the CPU die.

Image

8. Peel the protective plastic off the bottom of the Hyper 6.

Image

9. Slip the Hyper 6 heatsink into the Universal Retention Module and secure it with the spring clips. The stationary lip of one end is attached to the raised arm of the module first and then the clip is pressed firmly over the raised arm on the other side until it clicks into place. Check to be sure the Hyper 6 is flat and level with the motherboard.

Image

10. Attach the included fan to the front or rear of the Hyper 6 with the 4 screws supplied. The air should be directed over the heatsink in one direction, preferably toward the rear of the case, near the exhaust fan.

Enjoy the silence and the superior cooling of the Hyper 6 CPU Cooler. Image

QUESTION:
What do I do if there is a Northbridge heatsink or a fan connector in the way of the Hyper 6?

Image

ANSWER:
Cooler Master has designed the Hyper 6 to be on a raised platform and avoid interference with neighboring heatsinks and fan connectors, but it may happen. If part of the Universal Retention Module contacts a fan connector, you may be able to remove a small portion of the module with a sharp knife or a pair of cutters.

Image

If you have a large heatsink that prevents the proper mounting of the Hyper 6, you may be able to remove some of the cooling fins of the heatsink without substantially reducing the cooling power.

Image

QUESTION:
The Hyper 6 heatsink platform seems to be larger than the space of the Universal Retention Module. How can I make it fit?

Image

ANSWER:
Due to the flexibility of the Universal Retention Module and the slight variance in the mounting holes, you may encounter a problem fitting the base of the Hyper 6 into the module. This can be easily remedied with a flat, thin object, such as a small putty knife.

Slip the putty knife between the base of the Hyper 6 and the edge of the module.

Image

Tilt the putty knife up toward the side of the Hyper 6 while pressing the Hyper 6 down into the module. The sidewall of the module will flex easily and allow for a good fit.

Image

QUESTION:
Can I install a different fan on the Hyper 6?

ANSWER:
Yes! You can easily install most 80mm fans, including the beautiful LED fans by Cooler Master. The original Hyper 6 fan has recessed holes for the supplied screws. Most other fans, including Cooler Master's own, do not have these recessed holes. You will have to purchase new screws that are slightly longer, in order to fit other 80mm fans.

Hi all,

This is a thread that invites your questions and your answers to any issues concerning the Hyper 6 CPU cooler. I will add them to the official FAQ from time to time and prune the thread of the replies to keep this a well focused and helpful document.

Please feel free to ask any questions about the Hyper 6. All other questions will be moved or deleted, so please stay on topic.

If you have images you would like to share and possibly be included in the FAQ, please post them in your replies. The images may be edited for content and clarity and will become the property of Cooler Master, Inc., but you will be given credit as the contributor.

Thank you in advance for your participation and I hope you find this useful.

Oh, you've still got plenty to do. Besides, your job is too hard for me. I don't think I would have the patience. I'm too, um, grumpy. ;)

What exactly is your job title?

Oh, and great tutorial right there. I'm not too keen on removing the built in retention clip, but for a HSF like that I'd say it's worth it.
I'm staying with my AMD XP chip for a while, so I want a nice light heatsink because I'm going to be moving it from time to time. Either that or something that screws into the motherboard.

Good info, makes me a little more comfortable getting the thing....though it still scares me that the bugger weights over 2 pounds with the fan.

Hyper 6 in a Stacker, mounted on an ASUS A8V Deluxe:

I had to modify the feet of the retention bracket with a dremel, but it was just a minor notch in two of the upper feet, to give some clearance to some SMC's.

I don't think any AIR cooling setup can match the cooling of water, but I Know they can come pretty close to it. Unless it's a terrible water cooled system, then i doubht it. The Hyper 6 does probaly the best that air cooling can get :D

Hi all,

Could the Hyper 6 be installed on an MSI 865PE Neo-2P Platinum Edition?
The northbridge heatsink is taller than the MSI mainboard you have there.
And also I have 2 Corsair XMS3200LL Pro, which is also taller compared to most other memory modules? Can anyone help?

Thanks

You might have to trim it with a Dremel or buy a new heatsink. As in heat sink, I mean north bridge.
