Project: BEAST - 2009 Mod Contest Entry

Here it is guys i hope you like the case that i i have built from scratch.
Enjoy.
Gigabyte EX-58 Extreme
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping
12GB Corsair Dominator 1600Mz Triple Channel
Xilence 1000w Gaming Edition Power Supply
Evga 9800 GTX SSC Edition *Note( I was going to buy a 260 GTX but something happen and i came in short of money.)
200GB Seagate Baraguta Hard Disk
500GB Western Digital Black Edition Hard Disk

DSC005271.JPG
Here it's when i get it from the router after i have made the design in Autocad. I choose to made the case from 1.5mm aluminum sheet because it's very light. But the problem is that first it's very easy to bend from unexpected weight and second is a little pricey. The first thing that i have done is to attach the fans and the radiators so to determine if the dimensions of the Autocad design were correct. After that i have mount the motherboard plate in the correct height so to make the only thing that i wanted: to hide everything under the motherboard so it will show a clean view from the top and from the side. Later (not shown in the picture) i have mount the two pumps (XSPC DDC 18w Ultra Pump/Reservoir) the power supply, the hdd case, the driver case and the motherboard tray.

Here we can see the finished look before painting. As you can see i have mount the panels, the drives, the buttons and the reservoir. As for the side panels i have used a perforated plate. I was thinking of using Acrylic Window but later on i wanted to put a perforated plate. I have mount it with a 3M Scotch Double Face tape (Thank you Bill for the suggestion, it's the best that i have used so far). Next for my 4 fans ("Cooler Master Y720DCD-25T1-GP 120mm Blue LED Silent Fan 110CFM 16dBA" bought from Perfomances-Pcs) i used 4 "Brain Drain" 120m Grill (again thanks Bill for the design). Next for the drivers i made a case to mount on the case. The drivers are: Sony-Optiarc DVD-RW, Scythe Kaze Master, Cooler Master 5.25" to 3.5" Aluminum Bay Conversion Kit ( for the usb that they are in 3.5" format) and a ICY Box removable hard drive. Now if you are wandering why i put an extra plate around the reservoir it's because i made a mistake in my drawing of the autocad and make the hole wider. So i had cut an aluminum plate and cut the correct hole for the reservoir and mount it on the case. Also something i forgot to mention: The drilled blowholes that i had create at the rear down side of the each side panel so the power supply and the fan of the hdd case to suck fresh air to cool down the power supply and the hard disks.

Here we can see the top of the see. Here you can clearly see the three radiators (TFC Xchanger - Double Radiator 240 and Koolance Radiator, HX-362 Single 120mm). Also you can see the mounted motherboard tray and the holes that i have open for: 1. to send the cool water to the motherboard and 2. to pass the usb and power/reset wires to he motherboard. I open this holes so i can hide as many tubes and wires as possible so i can have a clean motherboard view.

Here we can see the rear of the reservoir. You can see that i have mix fittings of Bitspower "Shinny" and Koolance Easy Removal. A little note here: In the picture you can see a Y fitting but i had to changed it to a T fitting because there was a problem with the power wire of the graphic card so i have change it to have a better clearance.

DSC005321.JPG
Here we can see after the painting is over, I took the painted pieces and slowly i attach them on the main case. You can see that i have attach the fans(with the radiators), the fan grills, the reservoir, the amazing case feet (4 BILLET MACHINED ALUMINUM"Diamond Knurl" CASE FEET) and the power/reset switch (did you recognize the switch mounting plate from MNPCTECH?). Also i hook up the Scythe fan controller to check if everything is ok with the fans.

Here the same picture but with no flash. Now here the thing: After i took the picture i speed up the fan controller to the maximum (Note: I attach 2 fans in one fan channel) and the result is to fried up the fan controller. Thanks god that only the fan controller was burn up. So i had to bought a new fan controller and i came up with the AEROCOOL V12 TOUCH PANEL. The only thing is that is black but what else i can do?? And this time i hook 1 fan for every fan line of the fan controller.

Here the Acrylic window mounted with 3M Scotch Double Face Tape (again great stuff). Now here you can see the cpu waterblock (Swiftech Apogee GTZ Ci7), the northbridge waterblock (MIPS Waterblock for Gigabyte EX58-Extreme) and the waterblock of the ram (MIPS Waterblock Special Design for Corsair Dominator). Also you can see graphic Card waterblock (EK 9800 GTX waterblock). One more thing: You can see the T line fitting that i have mentioned before.

A photo of the front of the case. Also you can see the AEROCOOL V12 TOUCH PANEL that have bought to replace the burned Scythe fan controller.

The best pic that i have take. See how the light of the Logisys 12” -18 LED Super Bright Sunlight Stick shine the side of the case with the perforated plate? Wow again that's a great pic.

The right side of the case without the side panel. Here you can see the power supply (it's little dark) and the pump. The same is for the left side (no pic to show) but with the hdd case instead of the power supply.

He means a multiple amount of posts where you showed pictures of your updates during the building from beginning to end.

Yes, a detailed worklog is the only way to prove that you did the mod vs. just pics of just the finished project. Some folks who have trouble writing (or expressing themselves in writing) remedy this by uploading a bunch of pics of things done at different important stages in a sequential manner. You don't learn as much but is good enough to get the idea across as there is nothing better than a photo with an accompanying description of what was done.

In my forum, we separate the "finished projects"(just a few pics from different angles) from the "Projects in progress" (worklogs-some are 20-40 pages long). True modders will see a finished project maybe a couple of times, but will come back many more times to see something that was ingeniously done in detail in the worklog, in order to learn from the author. Also a true modder gets admiration from teaching others what he learned and implemented and is not afraid to share his knowledge or ideas. In others words, he not only works for himself but also for the betterment of the modding community. By then, he is usually labeled by others as a "Master Modder" or Sensei, if you wish.

Just my two cents. Don't get me wrong, you have a great mod..., I just didn't learn anything from you--get my drift?

Well, look who dropped in! One of the finest schools for modding no less! Bill Owen of MNPCTECH has some of the best worklog/tutorials on this planet. I'm not afraid to say that some of my modding tricks were learned from the great video tutorials that are posted on this fine site featuring Bill and other modding masters. I especially enjoy the the tutorials where you learn to do things using simple and cheap tools available to most modders (I don't think I have the time nor $$ to learn how to operate a lathe, for ex., and much less own one). Modding is just a hobby.

You will find one the best explanations for worklogs in their forum (in The Mod Bros.) . I don't follow their instruction/suggestions to the letter, but it was my starting point. My style for a worklog (probably not the best) is definitely mine. It is probably a little tedious but such were my experiences/pitfalls/successes in getting something done. I hope viewers will learn from my logs and I also include a lot of hints and pearls of knowledge learned...., just like Bill. Why? Because I will not be mass producing my mod for sale and thus have no fear of some competitor imitating my mod. I will not be making another mod based on this concept again, preferring to experiment in other other untouched/unseen areas (and there are more than I can reach in a lifetime).

Also, as the rule stipulates, no worklog, no participation in the contest. Good luck on your worklog! :D

I have managed to write some things for my case. Is this the correct way of the worklog???? I hope that my English are good enough so everybody can understand what i have done.
And i promise that on my next built in the future i will take more pictures to see better what i have done.
Thanks again for your comments.

Heh! Could have fooled me about "bad" English. Everything perfectly understood and explained, even though they were only the "finished" photos. It would have been great if you had started from the beginning...more photos and explanations were needed. Do you have your project on Sketchup or similar? It would give a better perspective of what you started out with and what you arrived at in the end. Even sketches on paper are useful. Lack of photos during construction can be replaced somewhat with dissasembly where you explain a certain part in more detail and the tricks you invented/used to get it done, for eg. the hdd case.

As you say, this is the first time you make a log (altho I've been a modder for over 20 yrs.), but it is the first time I make a log myself and also the first time I compete. It was coincidental that I began making my worklog and project when the contest opened. Seeing slipperyskip's (he has participated in many contests and won) worklog gave me a lot of ideas--the more explanation, the better. I will cross my fingers to see if the contest staff will approve your project report.

The next time, I'm sure, you will make a kick-:) worklog!

Cheers/Saludos

Well the only thing that i found from my sketches is that. This is what i sketch to see how the case will be and the watercooling loop how will composed. I hope this is something that it will be useful.
