I/O panel and Audigy2 ZS

Postby Rad-FHmod on Tue Sep 21, 2004 12:40 pm

Has anyone paired up the I/O audio jacks on the Stacker with the Audigy2 ZS yet? I'd really like to have those front panel audio jacks functional, but I can't find any pin diagrams on the ZS anywhere. Surely someone has done this. I think a brief how-to on this would deserve a sticky :)

I think this might help..

it's from the kX Audio forum site here

but be warned if you mess up the card Creative will be pissed and not fix it for you!!

Just make sure not let ANY of the lines/pin touch together/connect and you should be ok (you know from science class how the birds on a power line don't get hurt. Just don't grab the other wire or ZAP!)

For SB LIVE and Audigy 1 pinouts try here

whoot!.. this is a great start. Unfortunately I have limited knowledge of the difference between a GPIO, GPI1 and GPI2.... I do recognize the GND tho.. we have plenty of those to choose from, so 1 wire down!.

Any guru's out there that can identify (match up) this pin assignment with this:

oh yeah (thanks for the cable pic) ... forgot about the the 10 pin white connector near the front of the slot for the audigy 2 zs ...

1 - Analog Ground
2 - Analog Headphone Out Left
3 - Audio Backpanel Mute -- short to ground to mute the backpanel (when headphones are plugged in)
4 - Analog Headphone Out Right
5 - same as #3
6 - Mic input from front panel
7 - key pin (shouldn't be there)
8 - VREF out -- voltage reference for Mic
9 - MIC IN MUTE -- ground when mic isn't plugged in, +12VDC when mic is plugged in
10 - Audio cable detect -- will be ground when headphones are plugged in (not normally used)[img]

OK, this makes since now! thanks!, I owe BEER to many!

It looks like the 2nd left/right go on the mute function pins so when you plug in the headphones it mutes the main speakers (as should be). I can't test this till later this weekend. My system is water cooled so I have to hook up the H2o, bleed the sytem and check for leaks before I check it. If this works, I'll make an totorial illustration for sticky.

well crud!... Altho the pin assignments on the white recepticle are pretty straight forward, CM's plugs are incompatible with the pin size and spacing. the white pins are "micro" for lack of a better word to describe them. The CM plugs won't seat, and it's impossible to plug in 3 or more plugs in a row.

I'm sure I can get this to work fine with a soldering iron, or if I can find this plug adapter.. it would be very easy. But I don't think other people that are also looking to hook up these I/O ports to function are going to be too thrilled about this solution. It would be nice to know what CM was thinking when they released this.... What is their solution to this... and what sound set up did they design this for?

It was probably designed for a 'regular' soundcard/onboard sound which use 'standard' pin headers.

If you were careful you could maybe remove the black parts (make sure you label each wire first!) of the coolermaster plugs and just fit the 'sockets' (the metal part from inside the black plug) to the soundcard header, however you *must* insulate the 'sockets' (perhaps with insulation tape, heat-shrink tubing would be a better option though) just incase they move and short out on eachother (possibly killing your soundcard)

Doing it this way rather than soldering them on will let you unplug them so you can still remove your soundcard, and also you could remove the heatskrink/insulation and re-fit them into the black parts of the CM plugs if you need to in the future.

heh, exactly what I was thinking..... but each plug would also need to be crimped to grab these skinnier pins. Easy in theory, but this is micro surgury. I'm looking at the first pin assignment right now, and trying to find info as to what these lables mean. This would be the best plug and pray solution since the pin size is the same..

Just file the one side (or both front and back could work too but its tricky) of the black pin connecters down to almost nothing so that way they can't connect by accident.

If not you can get it to work then try the bare wires but be careful!

@bigbadbns, I think that was me.

@sklbns27... Thank you for the suggestion... going to try it tonight. The illustrated tool was especially helpful :) but I prefer my tool of choice:

I just finished doing this with my WM and Audigy 2 ZS card. The J1 is the correct header with the 10 pins. Note that pin 1 is the pin towards the center of the card (in case it wasn't already stated).

I had to solder the cable directly to the pins to get them to stay. It's not CM's fault, this one is Creative Labs' fault. Unfortunately I cannot get the MIC to work right through these pins, I ended up soldering the MIC/MICPWR to the rear of the card, jumpering the rear input jack. Kinda cheesy, but works. Let me know if you need help.

Check this site out: http://audigy2zshowto.blogspot.com/

Still I have some problems with the Mic

I have a coolermaster centurion 5, nothing but clicks and noise coming from the mic. The Headphones work like a charm!

Tried the dummy plug in the back, nothing. Tried swapping 6 and 8, nothing. I also get about 2 volts from pin 8, not the 5v i should be getting. Any help would be appreciated.

The case connectors look like so

L-OUT
R-OUT
L-RET
R-RET
MIC POWER
MIC-IN
GROUND
